Why does extracting data directly into Excel format causes the leading zeros to be stripped from some of my product numbers?

When exporting into Excel format, Excel will automatically assign data formats to each column heading. If the column isn’t recognized as “text”, Excel will strip the leading zeros.

If you have data with leading zeros, then you will have to extract the data to tab delimited format, then import the data into excel. When you import, you can specify a data type for each column, which will allow you to specify those values as text.
